Description

Now a major ITV series, The Long Call, adapted for television by screenwriter Kelly Jones and starring Ben Aldridge.

The Long Call
is the
No.1 bestselling first novel in the Two Rivers series from Sunday Times bestseller and creator of Vera and Shetland, Ann Cleeves.

In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family too.

Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance, but to take charge of his first major case in the Two Rivers region; a complex place not quite as idyllic as tourists suppose.

A body has been found on the beach near to Matthew's new home: a man with the tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death.

Finding the killer is Venn's only focus, and his team's investigation will take him straight back into the community he left behind, and the deadly secrets that lurk there.

Perhaps I’ll warm to this as the series continues but I don’t feel the authenticity of the central relationship

A different location for this Ann Cleeves story, but as good a read as Shetland or Vera. A very engaging & well written book. I enjoyed it & would recommend the book.

Boring book of boring people. The only interesting thing about it is how the author imagines so many people can be superb actors. The lead detective is the least interesting or believable “hero” ever.

Another absorbing page turner from this accomplished writer. I really enjoyed meeting these new characters and will be eager to be the next one in the series

Not a page turner. Vera and Jimmy Perez benefited from good acting in the TV series. I don’t think this is in the same leagur

Matthew is my new favourite police detective ever! If you’re a fan of Ann Cleaves’ work and like me, find them super engaging, then this the best of all of them. I hope there’s a series growing of this own too.
New characters new setting, same quality

Ann Cleeves is a fabulous writer who understands the need of a reader to like the characters, or at least some of them, as a story unfolds. The detective crew in this new series are an interesting bunch, with backstories and personal depth. It will be interesting to see the nuances play out. I miss Perez but I think I like Matthew more. This story is about a dead mysterious stranger on a beach, some twitchers, some do gooders, and a beautifully designed community centre.

Good Read did not disappoint 5/5 except being shoved down your throat the relationship status of the protagonist.

Ann Cleeves new series is as equally addictive as her two previous. She can never write them fast enough for me.

Ok storyline but the main thing was I found the new character quite pedestrian and dull unfortunately, and am in total agreement with the first reviewer about the constant ‘husband’ references. This smacked of sexuality political correctness- yawn!
