This paper examines the oriental aspects of Georgian poetry in James Elroy Flecker's Hassan (1922). Doing so, it suggests that Hassan is a medley of Romantic and Parnassian elements (2). What these two schools have in common paves the way for the prevalence of oriental leitmotivs in Georgian poetry in the sense that Hassan celebrates distant places and exotic social behaviours and codes. Dangerfield (1936) considers Flecker's poetic heritage as typical of Georgian poetry (3) (353). He is greatly touched by Parnassian poets, who place more emphasis on the emulation of classical works, mythology, epics, and sagas of distant places like the Orient. Like Parnassian poets, their Romantic counterparts, who have their influence on Flecker, orientally colour their poetry with the supernatural, the occult, and the wonder in the unfamiliar--topos that can be found in that distant Orient. In this context, Thouless (1977) is worth quoting: "The discovery of the East heightened all Flecker's gifts as a poet and confirmed him as a Parnassian; but Flecker was not wholly objective and Parnassian, he was also to some extent a Romantic, for his nature was a divided one" (31). Therefore, Flecker's obsession with topos Arabian and particularly The Arabian Nights (4) comes natural - an obsession that culminates in writing Hassan, which is seen as a revolt against the late-Victorian tediousness in its revival of the dramatic verse (Ross 142) and is historically important for it was published immediately after the 1st World War and simultaneously with modern masterpieces - not the least of which are Virginia Woolfs Mrs. Dalloway, (1922), T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land (1922) and James Joyce's Ulysses (1922). In writing Hassan, Flecker relies on Richard Burton's translated versions of The Arabian Nights, particularly the tale of "Ala Al-Din Abu Al-Shamat." In this sense, it is important to remark that Squire (1916) emphasizes the oriental affinity between Flecker and Burton (xxvii); and Sherwood (1973) reiterates how Flecker was greatly touched by Burton (34, 43). Flecker, to a limited extent, embraces the original source which can be hence added to other famous stories that Scheherazade spins in many Western translations such as "Aladdin's Lamp," "Sinbad the Sailor," and the tale of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves." In this play, Flecker celebrates the oriental bazaars, places and cities such as Cairo, Damascus and, above all, Baghdad. In addition, oriental figures such as Haroun ar Raschid, Hassan, Ja'far, Ishak, Selim, Rafi, Yasmin and Pervaneh are the prominent characters that appear in the play. It is not surprising that Flecker integrates Islamic, Jewish and Christian characters into Hassan for implicit justifications that will be explored later on. It is therefore worthwhile taking a closer look at religious encounters in Flecker's Hassan.

More than thirty years have elapsed since, on a summer evening, the tents of an Arab encampment might have been seen dotting the plain which forms the western boundary of the Egyptian province of Bahyrah, a district bordering on the great Libyan desert, and extending northward as far as the shore of the Mediterranean.
The western portion of this province has been for many years, and probably still is, the camping-ground of the powerful and warlike tribe of the “Sons of Ali”; a branch of which tribe, acknowledging as its chief Sheik Sâleh el-Ghazy, occupied the encampment above referred to.
The evening was calm and still, and lovely as childhood’s sleep: no sound of rolling wheel, or distant anvil, or busy mill, or of the thousand other accessories of human labour, intruded harshly on the ear. Within the encampment there was indeed the “watch-dog’s honest bark,” the voices of women and children, mingled with the deeper tones of the evening prayer uttered by many a robed figure worshipping towards the east, but beyond it nought was to be heard save the tinkling of the bells of the home-coming flocks, and the soft western breeze whispering among the branches of the graceful palms its joy at having passed the regions of dreary sand. It seemed as if Nature herself were about to slumber, and were inviting man to share her rest.
In front of his tent sat Sheik Sâleh, on a Turkish carpet, smoking his pipe in apparent forgetfulness that his left arm was bandaged and supported by a sling.
At a little distance from him were his two favourite mares, each with a foal at her side, and farther off two or three score of goats, tethered in line to a kels, surrendering their milky stock to the expert fingers of two of the inmates of the Sheik’s harem; beyond these, several hundred sheep were taking their last nibble at the short herbs freshened by the evening dew; while in the distance might be seen a string of camels wending their slow and ungainly way homeward from the edge of the desert: the foremost ridden by an urchin not twelve years old, carolling at the utmost stretch of his lungs an ancient Arab ditty addressed by some despairing lover to the gazelle-eyes of his mistress.

Carl Maria von Webers frühes Opernschaffen ist heute nahezu unbekannt. Defendant Cusimano testified on deposition that he had left his car locked in the driveway of his home and denied that defendant Conlon, the driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision which gives rise to this action, was driving it with his permission. The fact that defendant Conlon stole the car from the driveway of the New York Institute of Technology was stated, without contradiction, in her deposition testimony and in the testimony of the arresting officer that at the scene of the accident she admitted that she had stolen the car. That Conlon testified to having stolen the car from a place different than Cusimano testified he had left it and that Mrs. Cusimano attended New York Institute of Technology are insufficient to create a jury question with respect to permission in the face of Conlons admission against penal interest. Under those circumstances the presumption of permission arising from Cusimanos admission of ownership was rebutted by the uncontradicted evidence and he was entitled to summary judgment dismissing the complaint (St. Andrassy v Mooney, 262 NY 368; Der Ohannessian v Elliott, 233 NY 326; Wilson v Harrington, 269 App Div 891, affd 295 NY 667; see Payne v Payne, 28 N.Y.2d 399, 405; 1 NY PJI2d 47).

Although Fathy was recognised as a proponent of nationalistic attitudes, he left Egypt at the time when it had just achieved its independence and when the British occupation had ended. Fathy justified his move to Greece as an opportunity to achieve more professional freedom elsewhere.
